You call this a rescue?
It was a long, tough fight to get to the object of our rescue mission. We'd fought wolves wolfmen, monks and scary women with dangerous hair. And we knew there were at least two more waiting for us downstairs, still between us and Velis's mother.
We didn't expect, though, that she'd tell us to go home.
When we descended to the lowest level of the tower we found Velis's mother and the man called Harbinger (a man with a strange deformity, an evil-looking tentacle growing from his side). The last of the wolfmen was down there as well, but hidden
and he quickly agreed to not be involved in the fight.
But still, Velis's mother, the wisewoman of her village. Kidnapped by by the wolfmen
in Harbinger's employ, insisted that Velis return home like a good girl while she opened the door for the bad guy.
We could have assumed she was under coercion and still worried for her daughter's safety. Quick work by Ravik and Khad left Harbinger unconscious on the floor. The wolfman didn't last much longer.
Even with all the danger removed, we received barely a word of thanks. She remained convinced that we should open the door as Harbinger wanted, and when we questioned the wisdom of that she decided instead that she would go home and didn't need our assistance any longer.
At this point, Polimius, with his well-honed suspicions thought something was up and ordered Khad to restrain her. Khad loves a good wrestle and happily obliged. Even Velis had to admit that her mother was acting strangely, and we decided things would be easier if we knocked her out while we planned what to do.
We quickly learned what not to do. Ravik ventured out to gather up supplies we left behind and never returned. When we sought him out we found him badly beaten and missing most of his gear, apparently jumped by another of the wolfmen. After that, we did not venture off alone.
After resting up and reviving the Saraha. We considered what to do next.
Ultimately we discovered several things:
Harbinger captured the Saraha to help him get through the door in the base of the Obelisk. He needed someone who could read the inscriptions and interpret the riddle.
The Saraha's interpretation spoke of "the Obsidian Eye", "Awakening the life of the fountain" and "Raising the head of the behemoth"
She said Harbinger sought what was behind the door, which would direct him to artifacts like the Rod of Trimeg I carry. This story is questionable, more likely Harbinger sought to awaken this Behemoth.
A small obsidian orb I found on one of the wolfmen, while not the obsidian eye, allowed me to touch the door without getting shocked. (BUT only if the orb touches the door first)
It appears the fountain was intended to flow all the way up to the top of the structure, but it missed a hole in the ceiling and only made it to the ground floor.
The Saraha seemed to have developed romantic feelings for Harbinger, and become quite jealous when the female monk with the bladed hair was referred to as Harbinger's girlfriend. Velis was quite disgusted by this thought.
The Rod of Trimeg can be used to locate nearby objects. It grows hot when near a sought object, eventually so hot it cannot be held. The range seems to be very short though.
